Serving on the MLC Board of Directors is a deeply rewarding experience that will help you grow personally and professionally. In addition to developing new leadership skills and expanding your network, this is a rare opportunity to come together with the best and the brightest in your field to steward this unique and essential community.



Requirements for serving on the Board of Directors:

• Candidates must have a minimum of three years of experience in science education and outreach, or equivalent qualifications

• During their term, Directors must be willing to commit to participating in at least:

  • Three virtual meetings per quarter

  • One MLC conference per year 

• Must commit to actively working on a minimum of one sub-committee throughout their term to further MLC strategic goals

• Each Director shall serve for a two-year term



Role and Responsibilities of Board of Directors:

• Provides strategic direction for the MLC including identifying objectives and goals, new initiatives, and long-term planning

• Participates in implementing objectives, goals, new initiatives identified by the BODs

• Provides updates at each Board meeting about activities undertaken in pursuit of MLC

strategic goals

• Work with Chair(s) and Financial Director to manage MLC and conference

budgets

• Commit to actively working on a minimum of one sub-committee throughout their term to further MLC strategic goals

• Annually submit a Conflict of Interest form

• Directors have ultimate fiduciary responsibility for MLC and conference finances


Election Procedure In Brief (full details here)

• Candidates self-nominate. Nomination period closes on February 13, 2026 

• There are eight available Board seats this year

• Self-nominated candidates are vetted by the Board Election Committee (made up of Directors completing Year 1 of their 2 year term)

• Approved candidates must submit a Position Statement within one week of their approval

• The Election Committee then sends nominee names and position statements out to all participants in the 2025 MLC Annual Conference and current dues-paying members via email

• Each member organization submits one ballot; each conference-attending organization also submits one ballot (in the case that multiple ballots are submitted from the same organization, only the first submitted will be counted) 

• Voting will be open for two weeks
